Georgia
Known as the peach state, Georgia was first founded by the Spanish explorer, Hernando De Soto, in 1540. Although De Soto founded Georgia in 1540, it didn't officially become established until 1732, when the English explorer James Oglethorpe founded and named it . Georgia's state bird is the brown thrasher, the state flower is the Cherokee rose (see to the left), and the state tree is the Live Oak. The state song, 'Georgia On My Mind', was written by Stuart Gorrell, and composed by, Hoagy Carmichael and was made famous nationally by the great musician Ray Charles. Georgia's state mottos is 'wisdom, justice, and moderation'.
