ECONOMY
Georgia, founded by James Oglethorpe, was the last of the thirteen colonies, and the least alike of the thirteen colonies. When Oglethorpe founded Georgia, he didn't want any slaves, anybody to own more than 500 acres of land, or to import or export goods. After the war of Austrian Succession (1740-1748), the cost was so high that the English Parliament had little money to give to the colonies (specifically Georgia). Due to this, in the 1740s Georgia became self sufficient.
When this didn't work, in 1749 16 years into the trustees government, Georgia exported their first goods. At the same time James Habersham wanted slavory to be legalized. Due to this, and the constant bickering of colonist, Oglethorpe finally allowed slavery and the owning of large plantations. After this happened, it fulfilled some of the colonist dreams to own large plantations.
Also, when the colony had slaves, there were only about 500 slaves , but, in less than 20 years, it almost jumped up to 18,000. South Carolina enjoyed having economic power over Georgia, but after the legalization of slaves, Georgia became wealthy. Within 20 years Georgia dominated the apex of lower country Georgia's rice economy. Georgia began to import slaves directly from Africa, mainly from Gambia, Angola, and sierra Leone. Most slaves had physically demanding jobs, but some worked in Savannah's urban economy.
When the trustees went to king George II, they said they did not want to finish the 21 years they agreed to in the charter. due to this King George II made Georgia a royal colony in 1752. When this happened, the slave trade jumped up even more. Rice, indigo, lumber, wild turkey, and wild dear, was at a surplus.
